Critical Conversations, formerly Plenaries, are opportunities for attendees to engage with scholars and professionals on topics that are relevant to higher education and student affairs right now. These may be a speaker or a panel of guests who will share their knowledge with convention attendees. These sessions occur in the Ferrara Theater and are open to all attendees.
ACPA Scholars Panel

Scholars within the association will discuss how their research has emerged, developed, and evolved over the course of their career. ACPA Scholars have the opportunity to collaborate and support one another through the ACPA Senior and Emerging Scholars program. This cohort is uniquely connected by the pandemics as well as an era of virtual learning and collaboration.

S.A.M.S.: Parenting during a Pandemic

S.A.M.S. (Student Affairs Moms) is the largest online community for mothers who work in the student affairs profession. This critical conversation will be a candid view into the lived experiences of mothers who were parents, professionals and battled the pandemic. This 60 minute session will be a resource for any professional on how to balance motherhood as well as provide resources for institutions to champion the voices and needs of mothers in higher education.

Caucusing and Affinity Groups: Self Work Tools for Institutional Transformation and Change

Over the last 10 years, the understanding of “self work” as it relates to creating more inclusive spaces have become more widely accepted. One tool or practice for doing this work has been the use of Caucusing or Affinity Groups. While these practices can be very effective, they can also do more harm than good. The faculty of the Social Justice Training Institute has had more than 23 years of experience with Caucusing and Affinity groups. In this session they will share how to most effectively use these tools to support institutional transformation and change.

ACPA @ 100: Reflecting on the Importance of Entity Groups

This panel will reflect on the ways these groups have led ACPA’s first 100 years of impact on the field of Student Affairs.
